Employment is a contract between two parties, one being the employer and the other being the employee. An employee may be defined as "A person in the service of another under any contract of hire, express or implied, oral or written, where the employer has the power or right to control and direct the employee in the material details of how the work is to be performed." Some people performing work for payment by others do not meet the criteria and can qualify as freelance workers, contract workers, or simply self-employed.

Employment is very important to virtually everyone. Students often work part time to earn the money for their discretionary expenses, and many of them learn skills while still in school that help them transition to careers later in life. Families need steady income from employment to ensure that they can pay their bills, provide food, shelter and clothing for their offspring and provide some modicum of enjoyment for themselves. Unemployment is therefore a very difficult situation for those effected.

Some businesses provide help to those seeking to work. They match the employable with employers looking for qualified staff. Some of these businesses specialize in temporary staffing, such as when an employee is on vacation or off on leave.
